The Children of Agape choir invited to play at 46664 concert to honour Nelson Mandela at 90 London, Hyde Park, June 27th, 2008
The Children of Agape, all Aids orphans from South Africa, will sing on stage with Annie Lennox the title of their film and album 'We Are Together' at the 46664 concert in Hyde Park on 27th June. Honouring Nelson Mandela in his 90th year, many of the world's most powerful and instantly recognisable figures and a concert audience of 46,664 will pay their tributes to one of the world's most loved leaders, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and icon of freedom, Nelson 'Madiba' Mandela. Mr. Mandela will arrive in London in June to take part in a series of events to mark his birthday: a very rare occasion since he is now finally 'retired from retirement.'
We Are Together is the name of the award winning documentary shot in South Africa which highlighted the plight of the young Aids orphans who sang in a choir. The film of the same name will be screened by Channel 4 on August 2nd, and the DVD will be released by EMI Music on August 4th. The CD of the same name is currently available on EMI, and all proceeds from CD and DVD sales will go directly to The Rise Foundation * .
Other artists specially invited to perform for Mr. Mandela at the Friday night 90th birthday concert will include Queen + Paul Rodgers, Simple Minds, Leona Lewis, Amy Winehouse, Sugababes, Dame Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban, Joan Baez, Jerry Dammers, Razorlight, Andrea and Sharon Corr, Eddy Grant, and Jamelia, along with international 46664 Ambassadors Italy's Zucchero and Spain's Amaral. President Bill Clinton, Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Will Smith, Ms. Oprah Winfrey, Robert de Niro and Forest Whitaker are amongst those who will attend some of the events.
Joining them to celebrate the life of the world's most respected statesman will be South African and African artists including Johnny Clegg, Sipho Mabuse, multi-South African Music Awards winner Loyiso, Kurt Darren, the Soweto Gospel Choir, and the legendary Papa Wemba and Sudanese 'war child' rapper Emmanuel Jal.
