WE ARE TOGETHER wins both the prizes it was eligible for during its debut at IDFA, often described as "the most important documentary film festival in the world". The film picked up the overall Audience award out of all 170 films, and received the highest score in the festivals illustrious history. It was also awarded the First Appearance award for directors making their first or second films.
The First Appearance Jury report, 2006:
This year's First Appearance jury is comprised of chairman Doug Block (USA), Astrid Bussink (the Netherlands), Dimitri Eipides (Greece), Cecilia Lidin (Denmark) and Andrei Plakhov (Russia).
"The jury is grateful for the opportunity to award the first appearance award for directors making their first or second films. Each lives up to a time-honored tradition of cinematic storytelling, and not only show great promise for their future as directors, but are remarkable achievements in their own right.
The winning film was unanimously chosen for its strong and emotional story, compassion for its subjects, and unforgettable statement about the power of music to overcome adversity. The jury unanimously gives the First Appearance Award to We Are Together (Thina Simunye) by Paul Taylor"
